You are allowed to ask hard questions
Choosing a home for your loved one is one of the biggest decisions you will make. You should not feel shy about it.
A good home will welcome your questions. It will answer them plainly and honestly. If a place makes you feel rushed or brushed off, that tells you something.
Here are the questions worth asking. Take this list with you when you visit.
Is it registered and led by a doctor?
Ask if the home is a registered Mental Health Establishment under the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017. This is the law that protects residents. A serious place will show you its registration.
Ask who leads the care. Is there a qualified psychiatrist? Bharosa Eternal Home is led by Dr. Uday Kiran, a psychiatrist, and is a unit of Bharosa Neuro-Psychiatry Hospital.
A doctor at the helm means medical decisions are made with real training, not guesswork.
Who is there through the day and night?
Ask what happens at 2am. Is a nurse or trained carer awake and on duty?
Ask how many staff care for how many residents. TODO(asset): confirm staff-to-resident ratio.
Ask how medicines are given and tracked. A good answer is simple and concrete. For example, a nurse checks on residents through the night, the morning tablet is given, and it is ticked off on a chart.
What happens during a bad episode?
Relapse can happen. Even with the best care, a hard episode may come. A home that pretends otherwise is not being honest with you.
Ask how they handle an acute episode. The right answer is calm and skilled care, with the least restriction possible, always with dignity.
Ask if a hospital is close by if a resident needs more help. At Bharosa, acute episodes can be stabilised through the hospital.
Be careful of any place that promises a cure, or swears there will never be any restraint at all. That is not honest. Good care is honest.
What is daily life like?
A home is where your loved one will live, not just be treated. So ask about the ordinary hours.
What does a normal day look like? Are there meals together, activities, fresh air, and rest?
Can residents keep their own routine and small comforts? Can they have their own things?
Ask to see the rooms and the food. Ask to meet the people who will do the daily caring. How they speak about residents tells you a great deal.
How will you stay involved?
You are not handing your loved one over and stepping away. You remain their family.
Ask about visiting. Ask how they will keep you updated on health and mood.
Ask how they include you in decisions. Under the law, family involvement is a right, not a favour.
Be honest about distance
Ask where the home actually is, and how long it takes to reach.
Bharosa Eternal Home is in Achampet, Telangana. It is about 2.5 hours from Hyderabad. It is not in the city.
For many families, a calm setting away from the city is a good thing. But you should know the travel time before you decide, so visits are something you can truly keep up.
Trust how it feels
Numbers and rules matter. So does your gut.
When you walk in, do the residents seem calm and cared for? Do the staff seem kind? Would you feel at peace leaving your loved one here?
If you would like to visit us and ask every one of these questions, you are welcome. There is no pressure, ever. Reach out to Bharosa Eternal Home and come see for yourself.
If you would like to talk this through with someone who understands, we are here — no pressure, ever.
